Forproperoperation,thecurrentlimitresistor(RLIM)mustbeconnectedasshownintheexternalconnectiondiagram.Theminimumvalueis3.5ohm,howeverforoptimumreliabilitytheresistorvalueshouldbesetashighas possible.Thevalueiscalculatedasfollows;withthemaximumpracticalvalueof150ohms. .7 RLIM= ILIM Operationalamplifiersareusuallydesignedtohaveacommonmodeinputvoltagerangethatapproximatesthe powersupplyvoltagerange.However,tokeepthecostaslowaspossibleandstillmeettherequirementsofmost applicationsthecommonmodeinputvoltagerangeofthePA95isrestricted.Theinputpinsmustalwaysbealeast 30Vfromeithersupplyvoltagebutnevermorethan500V.ThismeansthatthePA95cannotbeusedinapplications wherethesupplyvoltagesareextremelyunbalanced.Forexample,supplyvoltagesof+800Vand-100Vwouldnot beallowedinanapplicationwherethenon-invertingpinisgroundedbecauseinnormaloperationbothinputpins wouldbeat0Vandthedifferencevoltagebetweenthepositivesupplyandtheinputpinswouldbe800V.Inthis kindofapplication,however,supplyvoltages+500Vand-100Vdoesmeettheinputcommonmodevoltagerange requirementssincethemaximumdifferencevoltagebetweentheinputspinsandthesupplyvoltageis500V(the maximumallowed).Theoutputhasnosuchrestrictionsonitsvoltageswing.Theoutputcanswingwithin24Vof eithersupplyvoltageregardlessofvaluesolongasthetotalsupplyvoltagedoesnotexceed900V. Notethatthisprotectiondoesnotautomaticallyprotecttheamplifierfromexcessivecommonmodeinputvoltages. Unidirectionalzenerdiodetransientsuppressorsarerecommendedasprotectiononthesupplypins.Thezenersclamptransients tovoltageswithinthepowersupplyratingandalsoclamppower supplyreversalstoground.Whetherthezenersareusedornot, thesystempowersupplyshouldbeevaluatedfortransientperformanceincludingpower-onovershootandpower-offpolarityreversalaswellaslineregulation. Conditionswhichcancauseopencircuitsorpolarityreversalson either power supply rail should be avoided or protected against. Reversalsoropensonthenegativesupplyrailisknowntoinduceinputstagefailure.Unidirectionaltranszorbspreventthis,anditisdesirablethattheybebothelectricallyandphysicallyasclosetotheamplifieraspossible. ThecompensationcapacitorCcmustberatedforthetotalsupplyvoltage.AnNPO(COG)capacitorrateda1kVis recommended. Ofequalimportancearethevoltageratingandvoltagecoefficientofthegainsettingfeedbackresistor.Typicalvoltageratingsoflowwattageresistorsare150to250V.Upto500Vcanappearacrossthefeedbackresistor.High voltageratedresistorscanbeobtained.Howevera1megohmfeedbackresistorcomposedoffive200kresistorsin serieswillproducethepropervoltagerating. TheoperatingvoltagesofthePA95arepotentiallylethal.Duringcircuitdesigndevelopafunctioningcircuitatthe lowestpossiblevoltages.Cliptestleadsshouldbeusedfor"handsoff"measurementswhiletroubleshooting.
